Everyone who has had a mild interest in audio production has probably heard about compression but not everyone understands what it does and why it's important.
On a basic level, compression is used to even out a dynamic performance of audio that fluctuates in volume. In other words, it makes the quieter parts and louder parts closer to each other in volume.
If you think of a series of mountains that represent your audio. Some are tall and some are small. A compressor would take all the taller mountains and squish them down to a level closer to the smaller mountains.
